In a world full of dark news and polarizing politics, finally, there comes an uplifting story that we could all take to heart! But let me step back for a moment to set the scene. A black 25-year-old waitress named Rosalynd Harris was serving a table of cowboy hat-wearing Texans. Now looks can be deceiving and though all of us would like to admit that stereotypes don’t exist, a bunch of cowboy-looking guys can put even the calmest server on edge. Thankfully, the men were not only salt of the earth gentlemen but after the meal was over they left a massive $450 tip on a $72 bill — that’s 625 percent in case you’re wondering. But the good news didn’t end there…
Written in pen on the receipt was a message that read:
“We may come from different cultures and may disagree on certain issues, but if everyone would share their smile and kindness like your beautiful smile, our country will come together as one people. Not race. Not gender. Just American. God Bless!”
But an incredible wrinkle to the story is that the encounter took place in Washington, DC, where days earlier Rosalynd took part in the Women’s March, while the three men were in town for Donald Trump’s inauguration.
When Rosalynd served them at the restaurant Busboys and Poets, one might’ve expected people on such opposite ends of the spectrum to have a rocky experience, but instead, Rosalynd told WUSA9,
“You automatically assume if someone supports Trump that they have ideas about you. But (the men are) more embracing than even some of my more liberal friends, and there was a real authenticity in our exchange. This definitely reshaped my perspective. Republican, Democrat, liberal are all subcategories to what we are experiencing. It instills a lot of hope.”
Rosalynd is even planning to use the much-appreciated bonus to help pay off her new apartment.
The heartwarming act of kindness was appreciated by the restaurant who later posted a note on Facebook, saying, “We rise by lifting others. A lovely act of kindness by a guest yesterday.”
Finally, some happy news in the world we can ALL learn from and celebrate!!
